ABOUT US

LEWIS PLACE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION, INC.
We are a neighborhood driven, community based, housing and community development,

nonprofit corporation. Incorporated in 2000, we are located in the central west corridor of the City of St.

Louis, Missouri. Our boundaries are Newstead on the East, Walton on the West, Delmar on the South,
and Martin Luther King on the North.

OUR MISSION

To revitalize the neighborhood, thus preserving the historic structures, the history, and the culture of this unique, predominately African American community; to keep the housing affordable and
the community safe.

VISION

To create a neighborhood that provides good quality, affordable
housing that maintains the beautiful historic structures and characteristics of the neighborhood.
The neighborhood will be safe, well maintained, and provide opportunities, cultural enrichment, and diversity for families and youth to live, play, and work.

Houses built in this neighborhood between 1890 and 1920 provide examples of the handsome brickwork of the City of St. Louis. Lewis Place Neighborhood is an area where one of the first struggles to break the color line was waged against restrictive covenants, which enforced racial segregation. The fight proceeded to the Supreme Court case of Shelley vs. Kraemer that ushered in the Federal Fair Housing Act, outlawing housing discrimination.
